The Basics of the GAMSAT

Those who seek Australian, Irish or British institutions for medical, dental, veterinary or pharmaceutical schooling must take an entrance exam called the GAMSAT, which stands for Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test. The first step is for a student to apply to take the GAMSAT. The basic criteria is that a student has to have a bachelor's degree or be in the last year completing said degree. The student does not have to have a bachelor's in a science discipline. To learn more about the Gamsat Test check out http://www.gamsatreview.com. The most important aspect of a student's application is the academic performance.

An online application is the cheapest way to apply. If accepted, an admission ticket will be given out approximately two weeks prior to the test's due date. The test occurs once a year, generally in the month of March. Each capital city of Australia offers a testing center. Washington D.C., London and Singapore also offer testing centers for those who reside outside of Australia.

On the GAMSAT, written texts and graphs are used to evaluate a student's reasoning and interpretation of information. It seeks to measure the student's critical thinking abilities and logic skills gained at this point in his or her academic career. The student will also be tested on how he or she problems solves across a wide range of topics and issues - this is the most important scoring area of the exam.

A student is given five and a half hours to take the test on one day. Practice a few gamsat test questions before taking the test. Sections of the exam are as follows:

Reasoning in humanities and social sciences is the first section, it has 75 questions and the student is allotted 100 minutes. This section is multiple choice and most likely will supply the test taker with passages from personal, argumentative or imaginative writing. Objective and subjective reasoning, reading comprehension and critical thinking skills are the main points being tested in this section.

Writing and communication skills are the testing focus of the second section. It has two longer questions to be completed in 60 minutes. There are two themes provided that the student must write about, one is generally a social issue and the other more of a personal topic.

The last section is reasoning in the biological and physical sciences, it has 170 minutes for 110 questions. Students are specifically tested on their abilities to evaluate data, discern scientific relationships, deductive reasoning and problem solve across Chemistry, Biology and Physics.

For test preparation materials, students can access the official GAMSAT website. It can be helpful to take a look at previous exams, familiarize oneself with the format and test one's on abilities.

The final score is given as a percent figure. Read More information about the gamsat test. For two years a score is considered valid. If a score is accepted by a student's desired school, they then contact the student for a follow-up interview.

Acceptance into medical schools is contingent upon three things: a GAMSAT sore, bachelor's degree grades and the interview.
